Chapter 1: Early Childhood and Education
Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 28 December 1932 in Chorwad, a small village in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. He was the second son of Hirachand Gordhanbhai Ambani, a school teacher, and Jamnaben Ambani, a homemaker. He had two brothers, Ramnikbhai and Natubhai, and two sisters, Trilochanaben and Jasuben.
Dhirubhai grew up in a modest and conservative family that valued education and hard work. He attended the local village school till the eighth grade. He was a bright and curious student who loved to read books and newspapers. He also had a flair for business and trading. He would often buy and sell goods in the local market and earn some extra money.
When he was 16 years old, he decided to drop out of school and join his brother Ramnikbhai in Aden, Yemen. He wanted to explore new opportunities and support his family financially. He took up a job as a petrol pump attendant at the A. Besse & Co. company, which was one of the largest trading firms in the region.
He worked hard and learned the ropes of the business. He also developed a keen interest in the oil industry and its potential. He soon rose to the position of a manager and handled various operations such as accounting, warehousing, shipping, and distribution.
He also started his own small-scale trading business on the side. He would buy goods such as spices, sugar, rice, textiles, and metals from Aden and sell them in India at a higher price. He also invested in gold and silver bullion and made profits from the fluctuations in the market.
He married Kokilaben Patel in 1955 and had four children: Mukesh, Anil, Nina, and Dipti. He continued to work and trade in Aden for about a decade. However, he had a bigger vision for his future. He wanted to return to India and start his own business empire. aa16f39245
